R7, R8? But we are till on R4!

It's an odd bit of news perhaps to Lotus and my friend Ed Brill, but there is a boom in Notes admin positions lately.
Moving to R7 you think? Hell no!
These companies are plodding along and want to upgrade.....to R6!
Now you can say well you see Lotus built a VW and R4.5 can last forever.

So as we run up to Lotusphere 2007, how many companies out there still have R4 or R5 servers? And why have they not upgraded yet? We want to help you upgrade, but you need to take the first step.

Here's one reason not to upgrade: Don't fix what's not broken!

I am not sure how many companies are still running pre-R6 environments. And of those that I know about, I don't know any that are running less than R5 except for Microsoft. :-)

Hi,
I worked for a company in 2000 doing a website (with login features, post of resume, connections with Peoplesoft etc etc...(Domino R5 on Solaris)), 6 years later this web site is still up and running, without a single downtime.

Sometime I check on them, they are still running it, why would them upgrade ?

Because it can do that too ? Well it is doing it right now, and they are perfectly happy with it, and still they develop some backoffice elements to follow the Oracle or Peoplesoft whatever connectivity required...

Which is the usual problem, older apps and stable environments win out over the up and down beginnings of new servers or services. The company I am back at, 11 years later, still uses the same apps they wrote back then.
Nothing to update except servers.
